QUEEN ELIZABETH GRAMMAR SCHOOL - SPORTS PAVILION

Project Designers: Weatherall Green & Smith Consultancy Services, Leeds

Civil & Structural Design: Melia Smith & Jones

Starting the pavillion expansion

The project involved enlargement and amalgamation of the school's existing changing rooms and function hall. This resulted in an extension of the existing function room into a building with three times more floor area than the original.

It was achieved by providing a new two-storey extension to the existing sports pavilion. The ground floor of both new and old were combined to provide the new changing and shower areas.

The existing structure consisted of a light- weight single storey steel portal frame with little extra capacity to support the new structure. The foundations were of a similar design. A new steel frame was therefore designed which cantilevered over the existing eaves to create the illusion of a single building. The new foundations against the existing consisted of offset balanced cantilever concrete pads.

The resulting structure created considerably enhanced changing facilities and a much improved function area on the first floor with excellent views over the playing fields.

The existing changing rooms were demolished on completion of the new pavilion and the area utilised for new parking area. MSJ advised the client and contractor on aspects of the demolition in respect of the CDM regulations.

MSJ were also responsible for the design of the new foul and surface water drainage system around the building.
