Previous Projects - Refurbishment ProjectsHACKNEY LEISURE CENTRE, REFURBISHMENTOverall Client: London Borough of Hackney Main Contractor (Design & Build): Whitewater Leisure Ltd MSJ Commission: Structural Engineering
The Kings Hall Leisure Centre is a Victorian swimming pool complex largely constructed in 1897. The centre consisted of 3 pool halls with health and fitness facilities. One of the pool halls was derelict and the rest of the buildings were falling into disrepair. Whitewater Leisure Ltd were commissioned in 1990 to refurbish and revamp the centre gearing the facilities to cater for modern leisure requirements. MSJ were commissioned by Whitewater to provide Structural Engineering Services including initial design survey, specifications, tender documentation, design of modifications and strengthening details, building regulation submission and periodic site supervision during the contract.
The project was split into work packages to enable an early start on site and to reduce the period of time that facilities were closed to the public. One of the original pool halls was converted into a dry sports hall, retaining the original features of the Victorian roof structure. The second pool was converted into a leisure pool and divided to form a learner pool with a third pool retained in its original form for use by serious swimmers and school parties. The changing facilities were totally upgraded incorporating a leisure style changing village. Extensive repairs to the building envelope were required together with strengthening works mainly to the basement area where there had been significant structural deterioration. |
