Previous Projects - Hotel EngineeringROYAL YORK HOTEL - CONFERENCE CENTREClient : Principal Hotels Architect : Merrell O'Flaherty Contractor : Walter G Birch Ltd MSJ Commission : Full service including foundations, superstructure & drainage Melia Smith & Jones have completed several jobs for Principal Hotels at the Royal York as well at their other hotels throughout the UK.
The project illustrated above shows the major conference centre completed in 2000. This was a predominantly reinforced concrete structure with a steel framed roof, curved on plan. The building is set into the ground and the rear wall acts as a retaining wall supporting the adjacent car park for York railway station. The construction sequence necessitated temporarily propping the car park whilst the original structure was demolished. The new structure was constructed in stages as the props were removed.
A major requirement of the project was to prevent vibrations from the station being felt within the conference room. This was achieved with a 2-layer ground floor slab separated by a resilient acoustic material.
