POOLS ON THE PARK, RICHMOND - REFURBISHMENT
Overall Client: London Borough of Richmond
Developer: Whitewater Leisure Management
MSJ Commission: Structural Engineering Services
The Pools on the Park was built in the 1960's and consisted of an internal main pool and trainer pool, external pool, extensive changing facilities, slipper baths and cafe.
The building was in serious need of renovation and maintenance when Whitewater Leisure Management were awarded the management contract for the centre in 1992.
They comissioned the design team including Melia Smith and Jones to survey the buildings and work up proposals for renovation and repair including modification and upgrading of the facilities.
The roofs of the building in particular were in poor condition and much of the structural steelwork was suffering extensive corrosion.
MSJ were responsible for all structural aspects of the project including working up specifications for the remedial treatment to the existing steelwork.
In addition to the remedial works the facilities were upgraded with the inclusion of a new first floor installed within the original foyer area to form a dance studio. The original slipper baths were opened up by installing new steel frames to replace the load bearing masonry forming a health suite at one level with an aerobics room over.
The project was split into work packages controlled by a Management Contractor. This allowed the remedial works in particular to be developed as the contract progressed and more of the structure became accessible.
