Melia Smith & Jones was established as a partnership in Leeds in 1987 by Brian Melia, Mike Smith and Steve Jones, to provide a consultancy service in structural and civil engineering. Mike's retirement in August 2000 led to the formation of Melia Smith & Jones Ltd by Brian and Steve.

In September 2002, Alex Bell and Neil Chambers were appointed as co-directors with Steve and Brian in order to reinforce the firm's commitment to Client support at a senior level and to place the firm in a strong position to take the business on into the future. In 2012 Ben Mabbs re-joined the firm, followed by Fred Higham in 2015, both initially as Associates to strengthen our capability in the building structures sector. Brian Melia retired in September 2016 and Ben Mabbs was appointed as a Director. Fred Higham became a Director in 2019 and Steve Jones retired in September 2020, followed by Neil in 2021. In May 2021, Mark Holmes became an Associate to strengthen our commitment to the infrastructure sector.

The Directors have worked closely over the years with a team of dedicated engineers and technicians, covering a broad range of experience. MSJ undertake a wide variety of work, a significant proportion of which is regular, repeat business from an established client base, as well as welcoming opportunities from new clients.

The firm occupies a small office building, a stone-built former stables with 2000 sq feet of floor space which MSJ renovated and refurbished in 1992 for their own use.
